The just breaking news that President Muhammadu Buhari would be seeking a second term in office is not a surprise. His body language and actions hitherto suggested that would likely be the case. The upside is that it puts a lid on speculations about his intentions. Senate President Bukola Saraki, who has also announced his intention to run, would likely now need to find another party to fulfil his ambition. Mr Saraki could also opt to challenge President Buhari in the ruling APC party’s primaries. And there could also be other candidates within the APC who are interested in running. A test of Mr Buhari’s clout would be whether he is able to get his party to adopt him as a consensus candidate. Considering the many divisions within the APC, however, it is hard to say whether he would be successful. Governance is likely going to be a casualty, though. The longsuffering 2018 budget, a recent $1 billion approval for the military, etc could become pawns in the political games to follow.
